International Human Solidarity Day 2020

The United Nations' (UN) International Human Solidarity Day is annually held on December 20 to celebrate unity in diversity. It also aims to remind people of the importance of solidarity in working towards eradicating poverty.

How can people celebrate this day? On International Human Solidarity Day, governments are reminded of their commitments to international agreements on the need for human solidarity as an initiative to fight against poverty. People are encouraged to debate on ways to promote solidarity and find innovative methods to help eradicate poverty.

  1. Activities may include promoting campaigns on issues such as:

  2. Banning land mines.

  3. Making health and medication accessible to those in need.

  4. Relief efforts to help those who suffered the effects of natural or human-made disasters.

  5. Achieving universal education.

  6. Fighting against poverty, corruption and terrorism.

An individual can also participate or celebrate the day by contributing to education and help the poor. This day is also celebrated by helping socially or mentally challenged people. However, governments are much expected to respond to the poverty and other barriers in society through Sustainable Development Goals, designed to facilitate a good future for all. The day is promoted through all forms of media including magazine articles, speeches at official events, and web blogs from groups, individuals or organizations committed to universal solidarity.

Historical Background The International Human Solidarity Day was established under the influence of the U.N. Millennium Declaration that determines the civil and political rights of an individual in the modern era by establishing the foreign relations between the member states and the U.N. On December 20, 2002, the UN General Assembly established the World Solidarity Fund. The Fund was set up in February 2003 as a trust fund of the United Nations Development Programme. Its objective is to eradicate poverty. It’s also to be used to promote human and social development in developing countries, especially among the poorest segments of their populations. The General Assembly of December 22, 2005 by resolution 60/209 recognized solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values and proclaimed the International Human Solidarity Day. IHSD is held every year on December 20 to promote the importance of sharing and the culture of solidarity to combat poverty and to encourage governments, NGOs, and almost every individual to organize programmes and debates either on a national or international level so that poverty can be reduced by spreading the awareness.

Conclusion In the United Nations Millennium Declaration, 189 world leaders identified solidarity as one of the fundamental values essential to international relations in the 21st century: “Global challenges must be managed in a way that distributes the costs and burdens fairly in accordance with basic principles of equity and social justice. Those who suffer or who benefit least deserve help from those who benefit most.” That is something we should all keep in mind every day, but especially this one!
